Profile of Professor Temitope Oluwagbenga Alonge

Professor Temitope Oluwagbenga ALONGE; MBBS (Ibadan), MD (Leicester), FRCS Edinburgh, FWACS (Ortho &Trauma), FPA, FIPMA-UK, CSFIEC-UK, the First Professor of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in the history of the Premier University, the University of Ibadan.

Born to the Igbaro-Alonge family of Okia Oka in Akoko South West Local Government area of Ondo State he completed his primary education in Ajegunle, Lagos in 1970 and his secondary education at Owo High School, Owo under the tutelage of the late sage, Pa Adekunle Ajasin in 1975. He graduated Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in June 1983 and obtained the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom in 2000.

 Professional Fellowships by examination includes; Fellow, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, FRCSEd in April 1991 and Fellow, West African College of Surgeons, Orthopaedics & Trauma FWACS (Ortho) in April 1994. 

 Professional Fellowships by Training, Award and Election include; Fellow, British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK)/Johnson and Johnson Knee Fellowship (The First Fellow for this award) between April 1997 and March 1998; Fellow, Leicestershire Johnson and Johnson Knee Fellowship between April 1998 and March 1999; Fellow, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Nuclear Medicine between February and April 2005; Fellow, International College of Surgeons (FICS), Fellow, International Professional Managers Association-UK, FIPMA-UK in October 24 2018 and most recently Certified Senior Fellow, International Expert Consultant-UK (CSFIEC-UK). 


Administrative Experiences include; Sub-Dean Undergraduate, Faculty of Clinical Sciences and Dentistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan between 1999-2000; Sub-Dean Postgraduate, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan between 2002 and 2003; Pioneer Head, Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma, University College Hospital, Ibadan between 2003 and 2005; Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, (DCMAC Special Duties), University College Hospital, Ibadan between 2006 and 2010 and most recently, completed a two term totaling eight (8) years as the seventh Chief Medical Director, of the Premier Teaching hospital, the University College Hospital, Ibadan between 1st of March 2011 to 28th February 2019

 His academic awards includes but not limited to the following; the Blair Aitken’s Prize in General Surgery, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, 1983; Senate Research Grant of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, 1996 Academic Session; First British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK)/Johnson and Johnson Knee Fellowship Grant in the 1997/1998 diet; Leicestershire Johnson and Johnson Knee Fellowship Grant in the 1998/1999 diet; Senate Research Grant of the University of Ibadan, 2001 Academic Session; the John D and Catherine MacArthur Grant of the University of Ibadan, in 2003; the University of Ibadan Advancement Centre Research Grant of the University of Ibadan in 2010; and the University of Ibadan Life Time Achievements Award of the University of Ibadan in November 2018.

 

He has organized numerous National and International Courses and his areas of research interests are; Osteoarthritis and Osteophyte Biology, Bone Infections, Clinical Governance and Performance Improvement in Health

His innovations in healthcare services are translational in outlook including compounding the Ceftriaxone Polymethylmethacrylate Antibiotic Beads in the treatment of Chronic Osteomyelitis and introducing this bead to the global orthopaedic community. In addition, he designed and produced the Alonge-Wale Intra-operative antibiotic bead maker to ease the production of the Ceftriaxone Polymethylmethacrylate Antibiotic Beads.
