Profile of Professor Olusegun George ADEMOWO
Olusegun George Ademowo was appointed a Junior Research Fellow in 1989 at the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT) and joint appointment with the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. He has PhD in Pharmacology from the same University. He was promoted Professor of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in 2005. He is renown in the field of malaria research where he continues to make significant contributions. He is Head of the Drug Research unit in IAMRAT where he leads multidisciplinary research teams. His research focus is on epidemiology and pathogenesis of malaria, malaria chemotherapy, He is also involved in development of new diagnostic techniques for malaria and other pathogens including; dengue, monkeypox, and SARS-COV-2 viruses. He teaches pharmacology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has won a number of research grants from local and International agencies. He has attended and organised more than 100 conferences locally and internationally. He is visiting Professor/Research Scientist to several institutions within and outside Africa. He has won several fellowships and awards including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Malaria Vaccine Advocacy Fellowship, Volkswagen scholarship, European Commission scholarship, Fellow Royal Society of Tropical Medicine, England etc.
He is member of
many learned societies such as Biochemical Society, England, West African
Society for Pharmacology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences London, New York
Academy of Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science,
American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, German, Biotechnology
Society, West African Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA).
He has served as Adviser to World Health
Organisation. He serves on many committees at the University, National and
International levels. He is Chairman of NUC Promotion of Biomedical Science
Development Technical committee. He is coordinator technical committee on malaria
vaccine, Federal Ministry of Health He is Consultant/Specialist Adviser to the
University College Hospital.
Professor Ademowo also
served the Department, Faculty, College of Medicine and the University in
various administrative positions and committees, He was Sub-Dean (Postgraduate)
of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (2002-2006, 2008-2010), Sub-Dean
Postgraduate School April-October, 2008. He was Acting Director of IAMRAT (2009-2011), Pioneer Head of Department of
Biomedical Laboratory Science (2012- 2015), Dean of Faculty of Basic Medical
Sciences (2014-2018). Chairman, Centre for General Studies (2018-Date). He was
Member, Board of Management of University College Hospital (2008-2014).
