Babatunde Lateef ADELEKE
A PROFILE OF PROFESSOR BABATUNDE LATEEF ADELEKE
Prof. Adeleke, Babatunde Lateef was born on the 24th of July 1958 to the family of Amusa Akinsola Adeleke, a direct descendant of Pa Akinpelu of Akinode’s Compound, Osogbo and Alhaja Taibat Adeleke, daughter of Alhaji Agboola Eruku, of Eruku Compound, Idi –Arere Area, Ibadan, whose maternal lineage is from Solaja Compound Kudeti Area, Ibadan.
Professor Adeleke was admitted into
University of Ilorin, in 1977, and he completed his undergraduate studies in
1981 with a B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Statistics with Second Class Upper
Division. Prof. Adeleke obtained a Master of Science degree in Mathematics and
a Ph.D. degree in Statistics. Prof. Adeleke had a stint of training, resulting
into a Diploma in Agricultural Statistics between 1984 and 1985 at the
International Statistical Programme Centre, Washington, DC, USA.
Prof. Adeleke was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Ilorin in 1986, and rose to the position of Professor in 2007. Between 2015 and 2018, Prof. Adeleke was the Head of Department of Statistics; between 1st August 2012 and 31st July, 2014, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Science/ Physical Sciences; and earlier on, between 2nd January 2010 and August, 2012, he was the Director, General Studies Division.
Prof. Adeleke was a resource person
for the foundation postgraduate course on Statistical Methods at a seminar
organized by the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja. He was the assessor of
the proposed research- oriented course that was submitted to the National
Mathematical Centre. He had served as the external examiner for both undergraduate
and postgraduate programmes in both Mathematics and Statistics in various
higher institutions, notable among which were the University of Ibadan and
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He had also served as the assessor of the
appointment into Professorial rank in Statistics in a number of Universities. Prof.
Adeleke had also served as Chairman/Member, National
Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Panel for a number of Universities.
Professor Adeleke is a
member of the editorial board of Ilorin Journal of Science and Journal of the
Nigeria Statistical Association, and he has served and continues to serve as a
reviewer for a number of publication outlets, including Nigerian Journal of
Science with its headquarters at the University of Ibadan.
Professor Adeleke served as
facilitator during the National Population Census; he was a resource person in
a workshop organized for the planning officers in the Federal Ministry of
Agriculture; consultant to the National Primary Education Commission and
Universal Basic Education on Project Implementation; consultant to the National
Board for Technical Education Kaduna; consultant to the World Bank Assisted
programme in Collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education on State
Education Programme Investment Project in Borno State.
Prof. Adeleke’s area of
specialization is Design and Analysis of Experiments. He has successfully
supervised eight (8) Ph.D. Theses, several M.Sc. and B.Sc. Projects. Prof.
Adeleke has also been involved in the teaching of courses at both the
undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Prof. Adeleke was the Chairman,
University of Ilorin Muslim; Chairman of University of Ilorin Branch of the
University of Ilorin Alumni Association; member of the Committee on Staff
Disciplinary Committee of the University Council; Member, University of Ilorin
Inter Religious Council; and Chairman, Planning Committee of its first ever
International Conference. Prof. Adeleke was at a time, the Internal Auditor of
the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and later on, he was appointed
the Coordinator of a special committee in charge of the UNILORIN Branch He was
honoured by both the National body and the Ilorin Branch of the Osogbo
Progressive Union, with Awards of Excellence in 2014 and 2008 respectively. Prof.
Adeleke is a fellow of the following bodies: Institute of Corporate Administration,
Science Association of Nigeria, and Nigerian Statistical Association
Prof. Adeleke is married to Alhaja
Afusat Bimpe Adeleke of Ile-Oba, Ijagbo, Kwara State, and the marriage has been
blessed with children.
