Ebenezer Olatunde Farombi was born in Osogbo, Osun State and studied Biochemistry at the University of Ibadan where he graduated as the only candidate with Second Class Upper Division and best student in his class. He obtained his MSc degree in Biochemistry as the best student and the only candidate with PhD grade in his set.

 He began his career in the University of Ibadan as an Assistant Lecturer in March 1990 and rose through the ranks to become Professor of Biochemistry on 01 October, 2006.

 After completing his PhD in 1995, he proceeded to the University of Liverpool, England for Postdoctoral training. He had another Postdoctoral training in Denmark between 2001 and 2002 at the Institute of Food Safety and Toxicology, Copenhagen, Denmark. He has been a Visiting Professor to 10 World-Class institutions across the globe.

Farombi’s research area is on the Biochemical and Molecular Mechanisms of Chemoprevention of phytochemicals. An accomplished researcher, he was cited and listed among top 10 productive researchers in the University of Ibadan in 2005 and in February 2015, following the Webometric Ranking of Nigerian Scientists, he was ranked number one Nigerian Scientist. Ever since, he has been consistently ranked among top Nigerian researchers selected for exceptional research performance and output.


A very effective and productive researcher rich in “Academic Currency”, he has supervised 25 PhD students in Biochemistry and Toxicology. He is the supervisor of the best PhD Thesis in Basic Medical Sciences within the Nigeria University system assessed by NUC in 2009. He also supervised the best PhD Thesis in the University of Ibadan in 2018.  He has published 258 articles in international journals and has delivered over 100 lectures globally.

He is a recipient of several National and International Fellowships and Grants in Dollars, Euro and Pounds. He is recipient of 2014 SOT Global Senior Toxicology Scholars Award. He featured in the University of Ibadan Role of Honor of Researchers with the highest Research output in 2017. He is a highly cited scientist with Google Scholar H index of 50, i10-index of 181, 10,404 citations, Research Gate scores of 39; 7,125 citations and 45,677 reads, a clear attestation of global impact of his publications.

He has held several administrative positions within and outside the University of Ibadan including: Head of the Department of Biochemistry; Coordinator, National Biotechnology Development Agency Zonal Centre; Leader, University of Ibadan Biotechnology Center of Excellence Project; Member University Central Appointment and Promotions Committee; Sub-Dean Postgraduate and Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. He is currently the Public Affairs Secretary of the Nigerian Academy of Science and also a member of the Governing Council.

He is a fellow of 5 prestigious Academies: Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry UK; Fellow Nigerian Academy of Science; Fellow Academy of Toxicological Sciences, USA; Fellow African Academy of Sciences and Fellow Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

He is married to Dr. Temitope Farombi a Consultant Neurologist at the Geriatric Center, UCH, Ibadan and they are blessed with children.
