Professor Hassan Ajisafe SALIU
I am a Professor of Political Science
in the Department of Political Science, University of Ilorin. I attended Bayero
University, Kano for my B. Sc degree and emerged the best overall graduating
student in my class of 1987. I also attended Obafemi Awolowo University,
Ile-Ife for my M. Sc degree in International Relations between 1988-1989 and
returned to Bayero University, Kano for my doctoral degree which I obtained with
a distinction in 1995.
My career as a lecturer began in 1990 at the
Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna as an Assistant Lecturer. I moved to
University of Ilorin in 1998 as a Senior Lecturer. I was appointed a Professor in
January, 2002. I have served as Head of Department, Coordinator of Professional
Programmes and Dean of Faculty for two terms at University of Ilorin. I have
also served in some important administrative and ad hoc committees such as Senate’s
Business Committee, University Estimates’ Committee, Chairman, Senate’s Committee
on the 2004 Presidential Visitation Panel, among others.
I have equally served as
chairman/member of NUC’s Accreditation Panels to some universities and a
Professorial Assessor for many universities. My record of service also includes
serving as External Examiner to many Departments of Political Science, Institutes
and Academies in Nigeria and abroad. I
am a two-term member of Governing Council of Kwara State University, Malete,
member, Governing Council of Lead City University, Ibadan from 2016-2018 and an
elected Senate Board member of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,
2005-2011. I am a fund-raiser, notable promoter of Town and Gown relationship,
astute manager of resources and a team player.
I have a robust publication profile
with 321 publications including six that came out this year. They have all
appeared in reputable publication outlets across the world and mentored a
number of younger colleagues through joint publications that have accelerated
their career progression. Indeed, some of them have become Professors in their
respective universities.
Outside the University System, I am a
consultant to some international organisations and the Federal Government of
Nigeria and have delivered one hundred and forty papers across the world,
including a paper I presented in Berlin, Germany on shaping that country’s
peacekeeping policy as one of the two Nigerians invited in 2011 for that
purpose. I have a healthy profile of community service that includes;
membership of the Executives of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive
Union (IEDPU) and a member of the Ilorin Emirate Council of Ullama, an
advisory organ to His Royal Highness, Emir of Ilorin, on religious matters.
I am a member of some professional
associations such the Nigerian Society of International Affairs (NSIA),
Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), Association of African Political
Science (AAPS), Society of International Relations Awareness (SIRA), among
others. I am a fellow of NPSA and a Board member of SIRA and a member of the
Board of Trustees of NPSA in addition of being her current Vice-President and
that of NSIA from 2012-2016. I am happily married with children.
